Epworth Sleepiness Scale

What Is the Epworth Sleepiness Scale?

The Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) is a widely used screening tool that measures daytime sleepiness

It helps healthcare providers understand how likely a person is to fall asleep during common daily activities.

The questionnaire asks individuals to rate their chance of dozing off in eight everyday situations, such as reading, watching television, riding in a car, or sitting quietly after lunch.

While the Epworth Sleepiness Scale does not diagnose a sleep disorder, it can help identify whether excessive daytime sleepiness may be affecting your health, safety, and quality of life.

Understanding Your Epworth Sleepiness Scale Score

Each question is scored from 0 to 3, resulting in a total score between 0 and 24.

0-9 Points: Normal daytime sleepiness
10-14 Points: Mild excessive daytime sleepiness
15-17 Points: Moderate excessive daytime sleepiness
18-24 Points: Severe excessive daytime sleepiness

Higher scores may indicate that an underlying sleep disorder is affecting your ability to stay alert during the day.

Why Daytime Sleepiness Matters

Excessive daytime sleepiness can impact nearly every aspect of daily life, including:

Work performance
Driving safety
Concentration and memory
Mood and emotional well-being
Overall energy levels

Persistent sleepiness is often associated with conditions such as sleep apnea, narcolepsy, insomnia, shift work sleep disorder, and other sleep-related concerns.
